First roll of Portra 400 in Kyoto
I found my old film camera in a box when I moved, cleaned the contacts, put in a new battery, and it still worked. So I bought a roll of Portra 400 and took the train to Kyoto for a day.
Why film again
Mostly to slow down. With a phone I take two hundred photos and look at none of them. With thirty-six frames I think before pressing the shutter.
What went wrong
I underexposed the first half of the roll because I trusted the old light meter. The shadows came back muddy and the scanner could not save them. The second half, metered from a phone app, looks much better.
I also forgot how quickly thirty-six frames go when you are somewhere beautiful. I ran out before lunch.
What went right
Two frames from a small street near Kamishichiken are among my favourite photos I have ever taken. The colours are soft in a way my phone never manages.
Next roll: Ektar, and a proper handheld meter.
